Thanks goes to the folks at PC Pitstop forums for the next 3 tips

For the older users among us. Try all of the following to make reading easier on the eyes.

Right click desktop/properties/settings/advanced/DPI settings to Large Size 120dpi./ok/ok/reboot.

Right click desktop/properties/Appearance/Font size/Large/ok

Internet Explorer/tools/internet options/accessability/ignore font sizes specified on web pages

One of the first things I do with new Windows XP installation or on a computer I am tuning up is to change the default settings of Recycle Bin and System Restore, both of which are set at defaults to consume a great deal of your hard drive space. The default for Recycle Bin is 10 percent. Ten percent of a 200 gigabyte hard drive is 20 gigs. Way too much! Here’s how to change it: right click on Recycle Bin > Properties > right click and hold on the slider and move/drag it to the left to something reasonable like 2 percent. Notice if you have more than one hard drive, you should select “Use one setting for all drives” or configure each separately.

System Restore default is 12 percent, I believe. You can do the math, right? Right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore > Settings > right click and hold on the slider and move it to the left to around 1000 MBs. That should be enough for about a month of System Restores--who would need or want to go back further than that?

The default settings made sense back when hard drives where 10 or 20 gigabytes, but not today when they are regularly over 100 gigs and then some.

Ever have trouble reading small print on your screen
when reading e-mail?

Here's a simple tip.
If you have a scroll Mouse,
Hold down the Control key on your keyboard
and roll the mouse wheel.
This will change the size of the print, smaller or larger,
depending on which way you turn the wheel.

For those of us with declining eyesight.

From the Into Tomorrow Newsletter I thought this was so cool I had to share it

From time to time, you want to be able to rename a bunch of files in the same directory, changing part of the file name but retaining part of the file name. For example, transferring a lot of pictures from a digital camera leaves you with something like: IMG_001.jpg, and you really want a more meaningful file name like 2006-07 Family Vacation - 001.jpg. Here's how you do it. Select the files you want to rename using the CTRL key. Then press F2 and type the new name. All the files will be named with the new name and a number in parentheses. For instance, if you select all and type in the name "2006-07 Family Vacation," the files will be named 2006-07 Family Vacation(1).jpg, 2006-07 Family Vacation(2).jpg and so on.

Here's a tip from DLTV: if you have an old air pump, like a foot pump for beach balls or air mattresses, you can use it instead of canned air to blow dust and stuff from your computer and keyboard.

We just tried it and it works!
