Do any of you use it?

I'm trying to make the switch from OE to Thunderbird. When I try to check mail it will show starting to download something like 1 of 43 messages. But nothing really downloads. It quits.

Any ideas?

Do you have your pop server and smtp server settings set up correctly? The reason I ask is some virus scanners like nortons will change these settings and if you expected to import your settings from OE , it will usally import the proxied settings that nortons and other virus scanners changed too rather then your real settings \:\)

I would manually check those settings in Thunderbird and check your firewall settings.

I thought I did. There's no import, this is on a fresh install on my laptop. I just tried setting up OE and checking email, and I got this error message:

 Quote:
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.haroldandrews.com', Server: 'mail.haroldandrews.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '+OK 3111 octets follow.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Try using pop.haroldandrews.com and smtp.haroldandrews.com or smtpauth.haroldandrews.com instead of mail.haroldandrews.com and see if that fixes the problem \:\)

That made it worse. It didn't even say how many messages I had before quitting. I'm pretty sure I have the mail servers right. I'll have to poke around some more. OE was working ok on the desktop. But I also didn't have Norton Internet Security 2007 on it either. I made sure to allow OE and Thunderbird in Norton.

The only other thing I can think of is you may have to setup your mail program to use secure connections which by default OE and thunderbird don't do normally unless you check the appropiate box \:\)

The reason I say this is because in your report earlier you said it spit back something about SSL which means it might need to use a secure connection.

That's not a big deal. Don't worry about it. \:\) I'll always have webmail to fall back on. ;\)

I tried the secure connections already, and that isn't used either.

Dont you use a spam program to check and delete mail before it goes to your email program?

If so, open it up and look at the settings it uses to get email with and plug those settings in to thunderbird \:\)

I decided to quit using Glocksoft. I think it was tripping the servers firewall with too many requests. Besides, I have fresh installs on everything now, no way to check old settings now. I want to use Thunderbird since it has a trainable bayesian filter and I'd like to check all of my email accounts at the same time with it. I got myself down to one for this domain and down to three for Highland Hosting. I turned off the email for all of my other domains. Been trying to apply the KISS principle to most of what I've been doing lately. \:\)

Oh you will love Bayserian filtering once you train it \:\) I use mailwasher pro for my spam filtering and it uses that as well as blacklists and is really great for cutting down my spam \:\)

Now that you got one account, I suggest you give it a try as I think the demo version of it will allow you to use it free if your just using it to check one email account \:\)

Read about it at http://www.mailwasher.net and grab it from http://www.firetrust.com/firetrustpro.html

I was having trouble with those pages so if theyre down check em later \:\)

An older Free version of mailwasher can be downloaded at http://www.download.com/MailWasher-Free/3000-2382_4-10450721.html?tag=lst-0-1
in case you want to try it out Harold. If you like it, the full version is 37 bucks at the moment and upgrades last for life \:\) I registered it back in version 3.3 and am now up to version 5.3 without shelling out anymore cash \:\)

Don't be afraid to ask me any questions you may have when your setting it up as I don't mind \:\) I do not know what I would do without my copy of the program as I use the registered version and use it to check 3 or so accounts with no problem \:\)

I don't use thunderbird anymore but there was a box I had to check for authentication when I did try it.

I saw it recommended on a mac site but I'm happy with the mail application in OS X it seems to correctly label junk mail so I'm not ready to try something new
