I'm having trouble with crossfading from one scene to another using both Sonic's MyDVD or Nero's DVD creator. They both garble the audio 'till the crossfade is done. A sharp splice edit or a fade out to black and back again sound fine. Any ideas?

I've never had that happen before, though you might try extracting the audio and opening it with some audio program, then crossfading and adding the audio back to the file. More complicated, though doable.

Why it is happening, I am not sure. Have you tried doing it on another computer, selecting different audio components/sound cards to use? If I had to guess, perhaps it has something to do with audio channels?

I'd guess they're mixing the audio together just like they're doing with the images. If you're crossfading for, say 5 seconds, then the audio for that time period would be crossfaded also. So it sounds garbled.

You could use Kris' suggestion or fade the audio out right before your crossfade and fade in right after the crossfade.

By the way, since your using Nero, have you run Nero's update program to see if it has any patches out that might fix the problems?

This version of Nero is as updated as it gets... And it's been orphaned for the newer version (and price tag). The MyDVD program came with the capture card and both do the same trashing to the audio. The video looks great though... I'm thinking that since both have the problem it may be related to the computer itself but what in the world it could be I haven't got a clue.

I'm thinking of sending some emails when I get a chance later this weekend...

Try not including the audio is the mixing process. Edit the video first using the audio to synch it up and then when you encode all the video remove the audio track. Once the video is encoded, splice the audio back in and reencode.

Hmm. I know that Nero has recode capabilities, but the MyDVD doesn't seem to be that advanced.

I may have to try both ideas and see...

I know on mine when I was working working on the music videos it would bog down having to encode the effects and the music so I would remove the music, encode the video, then load the finished video in as a new project, add in the music and reencode. It made it smoother, I think.

The scenes I'm working on have just a piano playing in the background and you can't see him so timing shouldn't be a problem. If I can't pull it out of the footage I may have to replay it from the camera and record audio only. Then put them together and let the video audio take over when people are talking. That might actually work better as a presentation that way too.

I emailed James, the one who played the piano, to see if he still had a copy of the song. I wrote it and we recorded it at his place before the wedding. He's looking for it and he'll email a mp3 to me when he finds it. I can use that to replace the audio on some of the rough scenes.
