I will be trojan hunting tomorrow at my nieces house - Does anyone have any good suggestions on software to have on a cd before I get there ?

So far, I think I will get swat it, mcafees stinger, pandas quick remover, and ad aware and spybot as well as a windows 98 boot disk.

Any other suggestions?

If your niece is having a hard time with trojans, I'd vote for the short list of Knoppix or Damn Small Linux.

I would too, but they have enough trouble learning windows, plus you can't play the sims on knoppix or damn small linux either

You might also want updated Java from Sun.

Already got that Did it when I installed it after I formatted

I am reading this http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ right now so I can boot the computer without a boot disk I did it once before in the past to see if I could do it and got it working before so I hope I can do it again

It will be handy to have around I will be using a cd rw first until I get everything just right then hunt down a cd r or buy some at the drug store and burn one so I can use it over there

Well their computer was so fubared that I ended up using the recovery cds I made when they first got the computer to format the whole thing and restore it to like new condition

Seems one of them took some sort of purity test and dont want to fess up as the virus was something like puritytest.vbs and I could not keep the data that was there.

I told them not to screw with that stuff and if it happens again instead of trying to save the data for 4-5 hours I will pull out the recovery cds and reformat that thing again until they start thinking

Sometimes it's good to have a clean slate.

Are they going to be running AVG, Spybot, and Adaware? Those sort of things?

I installed spybot and ad-aware and turned on the immunization feature before I left. Also I installed all the windows patches as well as installed AVG and Sygate firewall before I left.

That clean slate is ok until you have to struggle with setting up OE. I spent an hour or two trouble shooting and making rules for four POP3 accounts. One little oversight and they won't work.

Well my nieces got another virus last night so this time I will definately install firefox as last time I had to leave early. I got my cd packed with service pack 1 as well as the autopatcher program, so updating it should be easier Lucky i took time to download that stuff after I formatted it the first time
